Fall 2026 Driver Education Program
Fall 2026 Registration Information
Registration for the Fall 2026 Driver Education Program is now open. Enrollment is limited and registration will remain available until program capacity has been reached.
Eligibility
Students must:
- Be a Commack High School Junior or Senior (Grades 11 or 12)
- Be at least 16 years old
- Hold a valid NYS Learner Permit
- Be in good academic and disciplinary standing
Program Cost
The cost of the 16-week program is expected to range from $700–$900, depending on final enrollment numbers.
Payment may be made:
- By check or money order payable to Commack School District
- Through SchoolPay
Please note: SchoolPay processing fees are charged by SchoolPay and are non-refundable.
Program Requirements
The Driver Education Program consists of:
- 1- Weekly Classroom Instruction session – 90 Minutes
- 1- Weekly Behind-the-Wheel Driving Instruction session – 90 Minutes
Students who successfully complete both components will receive an MV-285 Student Certificate of Completion, which may be used to schedule a NYS Road Test and may qualify students for insurance discounts.
Attendance Commitment
Driver Education is a 16-week commitment!
Per NYS regulations, students are permitted a maximum of:
- Three (3) absences - that must be made up!
A fourth absence may result in:
- Removal from the program
- No refund
- No MV-285 Certificate
Because of the strict attendance requirements, students should carefully consider sports, employment, clubs, music/drama, SAT/ACT preparation, family commitments, and other activities before enrolling.
Mandatory Parent & Student Meeting
Attendance is required by BOTH the student and a parent/guardian.
Dates:
- September 2, 2026 at 6:30 PM
OR
- September 3, 2026 at 6:30 PM
Location: Commack High School Auditorium
Failure to attend will result in removal from the program.
Lecture Schedule Options:
Tuesday – Wednesday - Thursday
- 3:15 PM – 4:45 PM
- 4:45 PM – 6:15 PM
Driving Schedule Options:
Tuesday - Wednesday - Thursday
- 3:15 PM – 4:45 PM
- 4:45 PM – 6:15 PM
Saturday
- 8:00 AM - 9:30 AM
- 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM
- 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
- 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
If weekday driving slots are unavailable, students may be assigned a Saturday driving session.
Registration Process
To complete registration:
- Submit the online Driver Education Registration Form.
- Attend the mandatory parent/student meeting. (9/2 or 9/3)
- Provide a copy of the student's valid NYS Learner Permit.
- Submit payment or proof of SchoolPay payment.
Registration is processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Scheduling & Placement Information
- Students will be asked to rank their preferred lecture and driving times during registration.
- We will do our best to place students within their top preference selections; however, placement is not guaranteed.
- Schedule availability is determined by enrollment numbers.
- The program schedule and available sections may be adjusted based on enrollment needs.
- Once schedules have been assigned and confirmed, changes will not be made.
Important Notes
- Driver Education is not part of the regular high school curriculum and does not award academic credit.
- Schedule changes cannot be made once assignments have been finalized.
- No refunds will be issued after the program begins.
- Students should review the Fall Driver Education Calendar before registering.
