Girls Volleyball Dons Pink for Dig Pink
Volleyball official Debra Martin began snapping photos when the Commack and Northport girls volleyball teams posed together before their match on Thursday afternoon while donning pink.
The match was designated Commack’s “Dig Pink” event and benefited the Side-Out Foundation, which funds research to combat metastatic breast cancer.
Martin, who was assigned to officiate the match, will have her final radiation treatment on Friday as she combats breast cancer.
The significance was not lost on Commack volleyball coach Tracie Morenberg.
Morenberg invited Martin to pose for a photo with both teams’ captains before the match.
“That’s why we do the game,” Morenberg said.
Commack’s volleyball raised $3,000 for the Side-Out Foundation with Thursday’s event.
The total rose to $3,500 when Northport — the Cougars’ opponent — came with its own check for $500 to contribute to the effort.
